I purchased the Bonavita 5-cup one-touch coffee machine and wanted to share my thoughts. If you haven’t seen my unboxing video, be sure to check that out too! This is Bonavita’s smallest coffee machine.

Why I Chose the Bonavita

My previous coffee machine was damaged, which led me to use a French press for a while. While the French press has its merits, I grew tired of the time it took to prepare coffee and disliked the sediment at the bottom of my cup. During my search for a new coffee maker, Bonavita consistently came up as a well-regarded brand. My main priority was a machine that could consistently brew a good cup of coffee, and the Bonavita definitely delivers on that. I was able to snag it for $75, which is a great price.

First Impressions and Key Features

Right out of the box, the Bonavita has a high-quality look and feel, especially considering its size. One feature that I’ve come to appreciate is the transparent water reservoir. It makes it easy to see if there’s anything that needs to be cleaned out. The brewing process itself is straightforward, just like any other coffee machine. The manual recommends a 10:1 ratio of grams of coffee to ounces of water. However, I find that this ratio makes a very strong cup of coffee. Also, since Bonavita is a European brand, 5 ounces seems like a small cup. Plus, you lose some water during the brewing process. Personally, I prefer to use around 15 grams of coffee and 11 ounces of water for my ideal cup. Of course, the amount of coffee you use will depend on the coffee itself, its strength, and the size of your grind.

Once brewing is complete (and it doesn’t take long), you have to remove the filter holder, replace it with the coffee top, and then you can pour your coffee. It’s important to note that this machine doesn’t have a hot plate, so the coffee will stay hot in the carafe for only about 20 to 30 minutes.

Another feature worth mentioning is the pre-infusion cycle, which is designed to improve the extraction of freshly roasted coffee. You can activate this by holding the power button until it flashes. To be honest, I haven’t really noticed a significant difference with this feature.

Negatives

There are a couple of negatives to this machine. First, the filter holder is a separate piece, and you have to find a place to put it after brewing to avoid drips. This can be a bit annoying. Second, you have to screw on the top to the carafe to pour the coffee and keep it hot. The carafe’s design isn’t the best, and it tends to hold onto some of the brewed coffee. This means you don’t get the exact amount you brewed, so you need to account for that by adding a little extra coffee and water. Some reviewers say this doesn’t bother them, but it does bother me – I want to drink all the coffee I brewed!

Final Thoughts

Despite these minor drawbacks, I am happy with my purchase. The Bonavita 5-cup one-touch coffee machine does exactly what I want it to do: brew a delicious, hot cup of coffee.
